The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have suspended their nationwide strike for one month, with operations expected to resume on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

This decision follows commitments from the government to address withheld salaries.

The unions initiated the indefinite strike on October 28, 2024, citing the government’s lack of responsiveness to their demands for overdue payments and earned allowances.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions explained that extensive discussions with the Federal Government had led to a breakthrough, with an agreement to pay two out of the four months of withheld salaries.

Payment for one month has reportedly been fulfilled, with the second expected by the end of November.

The statement acknowledged the “steadfast support” of union members and outlined the commitment of key government officials, including the Minister of Education and the Accountant-General of the Federation.

In light of these commitments, the leadership directed branch leaders to hold meetings on Monday to inform members about resuming work on Tuesday.

The unions also noted ongoing discussions about the remaining two months of withheld salaries, the N50 billion Earned Allowances, and wage adjustments.
