Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Educational and Other Associated Institutions have threatened to resume their suspended strike due to the non-payment of withheld salaries.
This warning was given by NASU’s General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, during the National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abuja.
Adeyemi expressed frustration over the delayed payment of the two months’ salary arrears that were approved by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023.
The arrears, withheld during a strike under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2022, have not yet been paid despite the President’s directive.
He pointed out that while the Ministry of Education had fulfilled its role, and the President had approved the payment, the Ministry of Finance and the finance minister have failed to release the funds.
Adeyemi warned that the union’s patience had been exhausted, and NASU would be forced to resume the suspended strike soon if the situation did not change.
Adeyemi also criticised the finance minister for ignoring the President’s orders, stating that such actions undermine the President’s efforts to prevent further disruptions in the university system.
He emphasised that NASU had previously delayed the strike out of concern for the potential impact, but the union’s patience was now at its limit.
