The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is set to look into the allegations that a N15 million bribe was paid to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to revert money laundering charges against popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.

The allegations were raised by Bobrisky, prompting a statement from the NBA’s President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), on Wednesday, which described the claims as disturbing.

While Osigwe commended the EFCC for its immediate decision to probe the matter, he stressed the need for an independent investigation led by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The NBA is concerned about the potential impact of such allegations on public confidence in the criminal justice system.

The association also urged the Nigerian Correctional Service to clarify whether Bobrisky served her sentence in accordance with the law, as there are allegations she served time outside a correctional facility.

The NBA stated that if it is proven that officials were involved in any breach of law, they must be prosecuted and dismissed.

In addition, the NBA called for a thorough examination of whether any financial inducement was involved in the dropping of charges against Bobrisky. If public officials are found complicit, the NBA demands they face legal consequences.

The statement also addressed allegations involving respected legal figures, including Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz.

Bobrisky claimed that Folarin Falana contacted her about seeking a presidential pardon, a claim Femi Falana has denied.

The NBA noted that while it is legal to apply for a presidential pardon under the Nigerian Constitution, the process must be free from unethical influence.

The NBA reiterated its commitment to upholding justice, transparency, and accountability, urging the public to refrain from premature conclusions as investigations unfold.

It also assured that it will monitor the situation closely to ensure due process is followed
