The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has adopted advanced security measures, including automated search systems and tech-driven surveillance, to tackle contraband smuggling and other criminal activities in correctional facilities.

In 2023, over ₦150 million worth of contraband items, including mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drugs, and electronics, were seized during routine inspections and destroyed at the NCoS Headquarters in Abuja.

Spokesperson Umar Abubakar reaffirmed the service’s commitment to maintaining discipline, citing strategies such as regular searches, the use of canine units, and severe penalties for offenders.

He also highlighted a zero-tolerance stance on corruption, noting that staff members involved in trafficking contraband had been dismissed in accordance with public service regulations.

These initiatives align with Sections 51 and 52 of the Service Standing Orders, aiming to uphold the integrity of correctional facilities.
