The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has assured Nigerian workers that the recently approved N70,000 minimum wage will be reviewed in less than two years.
Onyejeocha made this announcement on Thursday in Umuahia, Abia State, during a meeting with labour leaders.
She reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to workers’ welfare, stating that the minimum wage, traditionally reviewed every five years, will now be reassessed every three years.
“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever. In less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” she stated.
This aligns with President Tinubu’s earlier promise when he approved the N70,000 minimum wage in July 2024, pledging regular reviews to address workers’ needs.
Onyejeocha, an Abia native, emphasised the importance of maintaining industrial harmony and urged labour leaders to collaborate with the government for a strike-free and productive year.
The Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ogbomna Okoro, praised Onyejeocha’s efforts and promised continued support.
Earlier, the minister met with the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers to discuss key Federal Government policies.
