As Nigeria sets to mark 64th Independence Day, the Federal Government has celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, describing it as a symbol of the nation’s commitment to freedom and liberty.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted Nigeria’s resilience and progress despite numerous challenges since independence in 1960.
He underscored the country’s rise as a leading African force and a respected global voice.
Idris credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration for initiating reforms aimed at boosting the economy, including pushing for local government autonomy to promote grassroots development, and transitioning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to lower transportation costs.
Other key reforms include tax system adjustments, foreign exchange stabilisation, and government revenue diversification.
He also mentioned the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which has made tertiary education more accessible through the Student Loans Act of 2024.
Idris acknowledged the sacrifices Nigerians are making due to these reforms but reassured the public of positive outcomes in the near future.
He further highlighted successes in combating insecurity and the government’s support for small businesses.
The briefing, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, marks the beginning of events leading up to the Independence Day celebrations on October 1, 2024.
Akume praised the administration’s achievements, including the launch of CNG-powered buses to reduce travel costs and investments in the nation’s armed services to combat insurgency and banditry.
He also noted the government’s response to the recent floods affecting many states and ongoing efforts to mitigate future occurrences.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde, through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, led an Independence Walk to commemorate the anniversary.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue praying for the nation’s prosperity amidst current challenges.
