Nigeria and Egypt have committed to bolstering their diplomatic relationship by establishing a comprehensive partnership aimed at addressing mutual challenges and fostering development.

This was disclosed by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a statement issued in Abuja by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Media and Communications Strategy Special Assistant to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar.

The partnership was formalised during the third round of political consultations in Cairo, where Minister Tuggar met with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty.

Discussions focused on fostering cooperation in security, governance, and economic development, with both nations reaffirming their respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Nigerian delegation, which included Water Resources Minister Professor Joseph Utsev and Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari, explored ways to strengthen the African Union’s role in addressing continental issues.

Both countries also pledged to align efforts on Agenda 2063, the African Union’s blueprint for sustainable development, while collaborating on counter-terrorism initiatives to combat extremism.

Plans were announced to establish a Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce by 2025, with a formal launch set for the next round of ministerial consultations in Abuja in 2026.

Additionally, recent agreements on visa fee adjustments and waivers for diplomatic passport holders were noted as steps to enhance citizen-level interactions.

Both nations also emphasised the need for conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts across Africa, with a commitment to promoting good governance and democracy.

The next ministerial Joint Committee meeting is scheduled for late 2025.

This renewed collaboration marks 65 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, with Egypt being the first African country to establish ties with Nigeria.
