The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to launch a phased, contactless passport renewal system, beginning in Canada on November 1, 2024.

This new system allows Nigerians to renew their passports online, minimising the need for in-person visits to NIS offices.

Announced via a video on NIS’s official X account (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the rollout will initially be available in Canada.

On November 15, the service will expand to the United Kingdom, United States, and Italy, with a wider launch in Nigeria and other global locations set for December 1.

In a statement, NIS noted, “This initiative aims to serve Nigerians more efficiently, meeting global standards with a contactless passport renewal and issuance process.”

The new system allows users to apply for passport renewals from home, eliminating the need to visit NIS offices.

Through the NIS mobile app, accessible on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store, Nigerians will soon be able to complete the renewal process entirely online.

While the app is not yet available, the NIS mentioned that Nigerians in Canada will be able to access it starting November 1.
