The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, conducted an awareness campaign on Thursday, sensitising residents, traders, and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) about the dangers of migrant smuggling.

The campaign took place across Ikoyi, Alagbon, and Obalende areas in Lagos.

NIS officials marched through these areas holding banners with messages like “Say No to Smuggling of Migrants,” delivering information in multiple languages—Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and English—to reach diverse audiences.

Comptroller of Immigration, D. O. Adebambo, addressed the road transport union and market women, explaining migrant smuggling tactics and its associated risks.

Acting DCG Migration, Charles Nonwahnge, also cautioned parents on adverse disciplinary actions against children, which he noted could make them vulnerable to exploitation.

The Zonal Coordinator, ACG M. E Oniledewere, commended the Lagos command officers for their dedication to the NIS’s anti-smuggling mandate.

She emphasised that officers’ commitment is crucial to combating migrant smuggling.

According to the United Nations, migrant smuggling involves financially benefiting from assisting illegal entry or residence in a country.

This campaign aligns with global efforts to curb smuggling, focusing on awareness and prevention.
