President Bola Tinubu announced that Nigerian motorists now have the choice of purchasing petrol at ₦1,000 per litre or opting for compressed natural gas (CNG) at ₦200 per Standard Cubic Meter.

This statement came during a meeting with executives of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu praised NIPCO’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy transition through its support for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).

He highlighted the initiative as a key element in his administration’s strategy for energy security and economic diversification.

According to the President, this shift towards CNG aligns with the government’s plan to promote cleaner and more cost-effective energy solutions for Nigerians.

The President noted that public-private partnerships, such as NIPCO’s involvement, are essential in advancing the transition to CNG.

He commended the company for spearheading the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which has raised awareness and provided affordable CNG conversion kits to motorists even before the official launch of the PCNGI.

By advocating for CNG as a cleaner and cheaper fuel alternative, Tinubu emphasised its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions and cut down fuel costs for consumers.

He also introduced incentives for commercial drivers to switch from petrol to gas at no cost.

During the meeting, NIPCO’s director, Mr. Ramesh Kasangra, expressed gratitude to the President for his support of the CNG sector.

He assured Tinubu that NIPCO remains committed to expanding CNG infrastructure nationwide to make it more accessible.

Kasangra reaffirmed NIPCO’s dedication to partnering with the government to ensure a smooth and successful energy transition.

With over four decades of presence in Nigeria, NIPCO intends to continue investing in the country, contributing to the expansion of the CNG infrastructure and enhancing energy efficiency.
