The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has raised a red flag over the country’s image on the world stage, saying it is still struggling with a reputation problem.
Speaking at a two-day training session in Abuja, the Director of Public Relations and Chairman of the FCT chapter, Stanley Ogadigo, pointed out that poor leadership and the actions of unscrupulous individuals are to blame for Nigeria’s negative image abroad. He also mentioned that some of these issues stem from fake professionals infiltrating the public relations industry.
Ogadigo stressed the importance of Nigeria turning things around this year, explaining that the country needs to make a serious effort to improve its image globally. He also spoke about fighting quackery in the PR field and ensuring that only qualified professionals are given important roles in government and businesses.
A key speaker at the training, Professor Okey Ikechukwu from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, also raised concerns about the growing influence of fake news and artificial intelligence on public perception. He warned that the digital age has made it easier for reputations to be damaged quickly and stressed that quick and truthful responses are needed to protect a person or organisation’s reputation.
The NIPR’s training is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s image, calling for professionals and leaders to work together and ensure that the country regains its position on the global map.
