The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members in states that have not yet implemented the new minimum wage to start an indefinite strike on December 1, 2024.
This decision was made during the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting over the weekend.
The NLC criticized some state governments for delaying or refusing to enforce the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.
“This disregard for the law impacts millions of Nigerian workers who face economic hardship,” the NLC said.
To address the issue, the NLC plans to form a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee to advocate for workers’ rights and initiate strikes in non-compliant states.
In addition, the NLC accused petrol marketers of inflating prices. They claim that the pump price is much higher than the actual market value, contributing to the financial burden on Nigerians.
The NLC called for a fair pricing system and urged the reopening of public refineries to increase competition and reduce monopolies.
The union also voiced concerns over the worsening economic conditions, noting that rising inflation has made basic needs unaffordable for most workers.
The NLC is pressing the Federal Government to implement social protections, affordable healthcare, and a wage structure that aligns with the cost of living.
