The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide mass rally set for February 4, 2025, to protest the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the union’s National Administrative Council, with NLC President Joe Ajaero condemning the hike as an additional strain on Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship.

The union has instructed its affiliates to begin mobilisation and urged civil society groups to join the protest.

It described the tariff hike as unjustifiable and called for its immediate reversal, warning that failure to comply could lead to further actions, including a nationwide telecom service boycott.

Meanwhile, the NCC defended the tariff adjustment, stating it was necessary for industry sustainability and was lower than what some telecom operators had requested.

However, the NLC insists the move prioritises corporate profits over public welfare and called on the government to reconsider the decision in light of the prevailing economic realities.
