NLC Threatens Nationwide Shutdown Over Telecom Tariff Hike, Urges Public Boycott

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has intensified its resistance against the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs, directing Nigerian workers and citizens to boycott major service providers, including MTN, Airtel, and Glo, for three hours daily until the end of February.

At a Central Working Committee meeting in Lokoja, NLC leaders accused telecom firms of betraying public trust by implementing the tariff increase before a government-appointed 10-man review committee could conclude its findings.

The union described the move as an exploitation of Nigerians, especially amid ongoing economic hardship.

“We are calling on all workers and citizens to suspend data purchases and refrain from using telecom services between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM daily, starting February 13,” NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja stated in a joint communiqué.

The NLC also issued a March 1 deadline for telecom firms to revert to the previous pricing structure, warning that failure to comply would result in a nationwide shutdown of their operations.

Beyond the telecom sector, the union criticised the government’s tax reform plans, warning that any new tax policies must prioritise easing the financial burden on workers rather than worsening their plight.
