NMDPRA Refutes Claims of Gas Supply Halt to GenCos Due to Unpaid Debts.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has rejected reports claiming it ordered a suspension of gas supply to power generating companies (GenCos) over unpaid debts.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the authority firmly denied issuing any instructions to wholesale gas suppliers to stop supplying GenCos, labeling the allegation of a N2 trillion debt-related directive as “false and unfounded.”

NMDPRA clarified that the misinformation originated from a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, which aimed to raise awareness about the wholesale supply licence outlined in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

The event, which involved participants from the OPTS, IPPG, and other oil and gas sector stakeholders, focused on discussing the opportunities and advantages of implementing sections 142 and 197 of the PIA, rather than issuing any orders regarding gas supply cessation.

Reassuring the public, NMDPRA confirmed that efforts are in place to ensure a continuous supply and distribution of natural gas and petroleum products, particularly throughout the festive season and into 2025.

The agency urged stakeholders and the general public to ignore the misleading reports.
