The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has apologised for his verbal attacks on Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution team, and his own legal counsel.

Kanu’s new lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), delivered the apology on Friday before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Agabi admitted that Kanu had been angry for a long time, which led to his outbursts.

He specifically apologised to Justice Nyako, describing her as one of Nigeria’s most respected judges who did not deserve such attacks. He also apologised to the prosecution team, including Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), and Kanu’s defence lawyers, whom he had previously criticised.

In response, the prosecution accepted the apology and assured the court of their commitment to a speedy trial. Justice Omotosho acknowledged that the prolonged case had likely taken a toll on Kanu, noting that he was 47 at the start of the trial in 2015 and is now 57, still uncertain about his fate.

Kanu, who faces a seven-count terrorism charge, pleaded not guilty to all counts. The court has scheduled the trial for April 29, May 2, and May 6, 2025.
