The Federal High Court in Abuja has reassigned the terrorism case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge following directives from Chief Judge John Tsoho.
Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the legal team had received official letters from both the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court regarding the reassignment.
The decision follows Kanu’s request for Justice Binta Nyako to recuse herself from the case, citing bias during the court’s hearing on September 24, 2024.
Kanu’s legal team welcomed the move, expressing appreciation for the judiciary’s response and reaffirming his readiness to stand trial, confident in his innocence. They emphasised that recent delays posed risks to his constitutional right to a fair and speedy hearing, making the reassignment necessary.
With this legal hurdle cleared, Kanu’s defence team is now preparing for the next phase of the trial.
