The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has assured Nigerians that the country faces no immediate threat from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus causing respiratory infections globally.
Speaking on a Channels Television programme, Sunrise Daily, NCDC Director-General Jide Idris stated that while the virus is not new, its impact is similar to common respiratory viruses like the flu, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
“There’s no serious threat for now. HMPV has been around for years and has been linked to respiratory infections. It’s not well-known, but it’s not a new concern,” Idris said.
He added that Nigeria remains in a monitoring phase, with no reported cases of HMPV in the country.
The NCDC is closely following directives from the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure preparedness in case of future outbreaks.
Reflecting on past health crises, such as Ebola and COVID-19, Idris highlighted the country’s improved public health infrastructure and readiness to respond to potential threats.
Preventative measures, including avoiding crowded spaces and maintaining hand hygiene, were advised to minimise risks.
