The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has appealed to Nigerians to support the proposed tax reform bills, reiterating their potential to simplify tax processes, enhance fairness, and reduce burdens on low-income earners.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, NOA Director General Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Rebecca Nasamu, explained that the Nigeria Tax Bill consolidates existing tax laws, repealing 11 outdated ones to eliminate double taxation and ensure transparency.

“The reforms will ensure minimal or no taxes for those earning less than ₦800,000 annually while introducing digital systems to streamline payments and improve accountability,” Issa-Onilu stated.

He addressed concerns about increased taxes, clarifying that higher levies will target sugar and beverages, not alcohol, to generate funds for education and healthcare.

Rivers State NOA Director, Young Ayotamuno, highlighted the reforms’ focus on supporting local production and fiscal federalism.

“The progressive tax system exempts low-income earners, promotes local production, and enhances citizens’ welfare,” he said.

The Senate is currently working on harmonising aspects of the bill, which remains under review.
