The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has clarified reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
NPF clarified that the President only endorsed the legal provisions governing the IGP’s tenure. Additionally, his actions are in line with the existing laws governing the IGP’s appointment.
This was addressed in a statement on Friday by the NPF’s spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stating that President Tinubu’s approval simply reaffirmed the IGP’s standard four-year term as outlined by the constitution.
This move has been misinterpreted by some reports circulating on social media and in the news.
Adejobi cited a letter issued on November 2, 2023, which officially confirmed Egbetokun’s four-year tenure, based on Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He also stressed that the IGP has no need to seek a tenure extension since his current term is still active.
Adejobi criticized the spread of misinformation, attributing it to detractors intent on undermining the IGP’s office.
