The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stated that the increase in corps members’ allowance, in light of the recently approved N70,000 minimum wage, will be determined solely by the Federal Government.
This clarification was made by NYSC’s acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, during an interview on Tuesday.
Following the signing of the new minimum wage bill into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024, rumours surfaced that corps members would soon receive an increase in their allowances.
Some individuals even circulated messages claiming that corps members needed to upgrade their bank accounts to accommodate a potential increase above N50,000.
However, the NYSC swiftly debunked these claims, labeling them as “falsehood.”
In a prior statement, the former Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, emphasized that no official directive regarding the N70,000 wage had been received from the government.
Addressing the situation again on Tuesday, Embu reiterated that the decision to adjust corps members’ allowances lies solely with the Federal Government.
She added that while corps members are expected to benefit from the minimum wage adjustment, there has been no official update or changes to their current allowances.
“When the Federal Government increases the minimum wage, the corps members are expected to enjoy an increase in their allowance too, just like the DG said,” Embu confirmed. For now, corps members and the public are urged to await further communication from the government.
