Parents in Lagos have stop their kids from returning to school in protest of a recent hike in boarding fees, demanding that the increase be reversed.
The parents, frustrated by the financial burden, gathered outside Lagos Model Colleges in Ojo and Meiran, staging peaceful demonstrations.
Placards carried by the parents displayed messages such as “No Reversal, No Entry” and “Say No to Boarding School Fee Hike.”
The fee increase, which raised boarding costs from N35,000 to N100,000 per term, has caused widespread outrage.Parents have accused the schools of insensitivity amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties.
The Vice-Chairman of the Parents’ Forum at Lagos State Senior Model College, Ojo, Ifeukwu Samuel, confirmed the fee hike and voiced concerns about the strain it placed on families already struggling with rising costs in fuel, electricity, and other essentials.
Some parents have even called for refunds, intending to transfer their children to other schools. Meanwhile, school authorities and the Lagos State Ministry of Education have yet to issue a formal response to the parents’ demands.
