The Federal Government has begun the free conversion of 10,000 commercial vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).

According to the PCNGI Strategic Project Adviser, Olayinka Rufai announced that 1,000 vehicles would be converted in the first week on a first-come, first-served basis.

The initiative aims to convert 10,000 vehicles in the short term and targets a total of 1 millin vehicles by 2027.

Rufai explained that the programme prioritises commercial vehicles to reduce transportation costs and ease the financial burden on the public.

Rufai also highlighted the safety standards in place for conversion centres, urging private investors to establish CNG stations across the country to support the initiative.

Azeez Adekanmbi, Technical Head at the Ajah conversion centre, noted that vehicles are inspected for compatibility with conversion kits and emphasized the environmental benefits of CNG, which emits almost zero pollutants and poses minimal explosion risks.

The programme has already started distributing free CNG kits to commercial drivers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and the Federal Capital Territory, with the goal of cutting transportation costs by 40%.
