The Minister for Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and related agencies to begin implementing recommendations from an inter-agency committee formed to tackle recurrent grid collapses in Nigeria.
The committee’s findings, submitted on November 6, 2024, are expected to offer both immediate and long-term solutions to grid instability.
This directive follows a recent disturbance reported by TCN on November 7, 2024, where a frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz led to a grid collapse at 11:29 am.
TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, noted that restoration began immediately, with the Abuja area reconnected within minutes.
In a statement, Mbah explained that the spike stemmed from issues at one of TCN’s substations, which had to be shut down to avoid further damage.
TCN is currently engaged in repair and upgrade work on key transmission lines, including the 330kV Shiroro–Mando line, enhancements at the Jebba Substation, and restoration of the Ugwuaji–Apir line.
According to Mbah, TCN is committed to implementing the committee’s technical upgrades and strategic recommendations to improve grid stability.
However, she acknowledged that temporary disruptions may continue as extensive repairs progress.
Chief Adelabu’s Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Bolaji Tunji, reiterated that the committee’s recommendations are designed to provide sustainable solutions to the ongoing grid challenges.
He urged all relevant agencies to intensify their efforts to ensure stable power, given its critical role in Nigeria’s economic growth.
TCN appealed to the public for patience during this period of repair and reassured Nigerians of its dedication to long-term grid stability, also highlighting efforts to address infrastructure issues like vandalism on transmission lines.
