The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a 7-day warning Strike across all its centres nationwide, demanding the release of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held in captivity for over eight months.
This NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi announced that the strike will begin on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12 a.m. Following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Sunday, August 25, 2024
He emphasized that the strike would be total, with no emergency care services provided during the period.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew.
While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
The situation has escalated to the point where resident doctors nationwide are willing to halt services in protest, underlining the severity of the issue.
Prior to the strike, NARD members had already staged protests in tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding the immediate release of their colleague.
