The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has assured local government workers of swift salary payments following the release of withheld allocations.

During a meeting in Port Harcourt with local government administrators, Ibas acknowledged the financial difficulties faced by workers and emphasised his commitment to addressing the issue. He noted that despite the Niger Delta’s abundant resources, economic hardship remains a challenge, which he deemed unacceptable.

He stressed that while the funds had been disbursed, strict financial accountability would be enforced. Local governments were instructed to submit their wage bills through the office of the Head of Service to ensure proper documentation.

Ibas, a retired vice admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, also highlighted the need for enhanced security at the grassroots level. He urged local administrators to collaborate with traditional leaders and security agencies to maintain order.

Meanwhile, Clifford Paul, leader of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), welcomed the development, expressing optimism that workers, who are owed two months’ salaries, would soon receive their payments. He also praised Ibas for his leadership and called for unity to drive progress in the state.
