Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has pushed back against Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s claims that some political figures are plotting his removal. Akpabio had hinted that individuals from Kwara and Adamawa states were behind efforts to unseat him, a statement widely believed to reference Saraki and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement released by his media team, Saraki dismissed the allegation as an attempt to shift focus from pressing issues in the Senate. He maintained that his call for an impartial investigation into Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment claims had nothing to do with seeking Akpabio’s resignation. According to Saraki, such a sensitive matter should not be reduced to political maneuvering.
Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has strongly opposed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate, labelling it unconstitutional. The rights group has demanded her immediate reinstatement, stating that the decision not only silences a senator but also denies her constituents representation. In an official letter, SERAP urged the Senate leadership to reconsider the suspension, warning of possible legal action if it is not overturned within 48 hours.
As debates continue, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition against Akpabio remains under review by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. However, the embattled senator has yet to reveal whether she will comply with calls for an apology, a decision that could determine the course of her suspension.
