Suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has initiated a N5 billion legal action against fellow senator, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North Central, over allegations of defamation stemming from a recent televised interview.
The suit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel, Michael Numa, challenges remarks made by Nwaebonyi in a recent interview. In the interview, Nwaebonyi allegedly labeled her a “gold digger,” “chronic liar,” and “blackmailer,” in addition to claiming she has six children from different men.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently under Senate suspension, argues that the comments were not only false and damaging but intended to malign her character and discourage female participation in politics. She contends that such statements have caused significant emotional distress, public embarrassment, and reputational damage.
“The allegations are entirely baseless, spiteful, and reckless,” the suit stated, adding that her political advocacy and integrity have inspired many women to pursue public office.
In her plea to the court, the senator is requesting a declaration that the remarks made by Nwaebonyi are defamatory, alongside an injunction barring him and his affiliates from issuing or circulating similar statements in the future.
She is also seeking an award of N5 billion in aggravated and exemplary damages for what she describes as a calculated attack on her personal and political credibility.
