The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse the recent petrol price hike, at least until the court rules on the legality of the increase. In a statement issued on Saturday, SERAP urged the government to suspend the price adjustment, citing the ongoing court case as a significant reason for caution.
According to the civil society group, the price hike will exacerbate the already high cost of living for Nigerians, many of whom are struggling under the weight of economic challenges. SERAP further emphasized that the increase is premature, especially with a court decision still pending.
The group’s appeal follows widespread discontent among citizens and stakeholders over the fuel price surge. Notably, the organization filed a lawsuit in July, challenging the constitutionality of the removal of fuel subsidies without adequate palliatives for Nigerians.
In light of the current economic climate, SERAP reiterated that maintaining the previous price will provide temporary relief for Nigerians, particularly as inflation continues to rise.
The court’s verdict on the legality of the fuel subsidy removal is highly anticipated, and SERAP hopes the President will act in good faith by considering the impact of the price hike on vulnerable citizens.
