University students in the South-West have voiced strong opposition to the recent increase in telecommunication tariffs, urging the Federal Government to reverse the decision. They warned that failure to address their concerns could lead to widespread demonstrations.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, the National Association of University Students (NAUS) highlighted the financial burden the tariff hike imposes on students who rely on affordable internet for academic activities.
NAUS National Vice President (South-West), Tiamiyu Olayinka, stressed that higher telecom costs hinder students’ ability to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, and submit assignments. He also called attention to other critical issues affecting students, including campus insecurity, unstable electricity, and frequent strikes.
“The increase in telecom tariffs disrupts education and adds to the growing challenges faced by students. If our demands are ignored, we will have no choice but to take action in defense of our rights,” Olayinka stated.
The association has called on authorities to act swiftly, warning that students are prepared to mobilise if their concerns are not addressed.
