A 32-year-old man, Timileyin Ajayi, has been arraigned at the High Court of Justice in Lafia, Nasarawa State, for the alleged murder of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

Ajayi faces a single charge of culpable homicide punishable by death, under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Justice Simon Aboki on Monday. The case was adjourned to March 17–20, 2025, for trial.

Speaking after the arraignment, prosecuting counsel Stanley Nwaforagwu expressed confidence in the case, stating, “We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge and are optimistic that justice will prevail.” He noted the court’s commitment to an accelerated trial, describing it as a “welcome development.”

On his part, defence counsel Joseph Tukur said, “My client has entered his plea, and as required by law, it is the prosecution’s responsibility to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. My role is to ensure the law is upheld during the trial.”

Representing the family of the deceased, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Jibrin Okutekpa stressed the significance of the case.

“This is a matter of national importance, and we are here to ensure justice is served,” he said.

The victim, Salome Adaidu, was a corps member serving with Nicon Insurance in Abuja before her untimely death.

She was reportedly killed when she visited Ajayi at his residence in Papalana, New Karshi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

According to police reports, Ajayi was apprehended on January 12, 2025, while attempting to dispose of Salome’s remains after allegedly killing and dismembering her.

The police recovered the knife and machetes used in the crime during his arrest.

In a chilling confession to reporters, Ajayi admitted to the crime, claiming it was unplanned.

“I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time. It wasn’t something I planned, but I found chats with other guys on her phone, and that pushed me to act,” he said. He further claimed he had no regrets, adding, “Life is reciprocal. I don’t regret it because we were compatible.”

The case has drawn national attention, with calls for justice and stricter measures to address violent crimes.
