President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2024 “Person of the Year in Organized Crime and Corruption” by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

Since 2012, the OCCRP award has recognised individuals with significant roles in global organised crime and corruption, selected by a panel of experts in civil society, academia, and journalism.

This year’s finalists include Kenyan President William Ruto, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Indian businessman Gautam Adani.

The 2024 award was ultimately given to former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad for his regime’s alleged human rights violations and corruption.

Additionally, OCCRP introduced a special “Lifetime Non-Achievement Award” for the first time, presented to Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo for widespread embezzlement and repression during his long rule.

Previous recipients of the OCCRP award include María Consuelo Porras (2023) and Yevgeny Prigozhin (2022).
