President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commmittment to preserving the independence and sanctity of Nigeria’s judiciary.
He made this pledge on Monday while swearing in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, Nigeria’s second female CJN, assumed office following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu highlighted the judiciary’s critical role in safeguarding the nation’s constitutional democracy, describing it as a pillar that holds the democratic framework in place.
The President highlighted the importance of maintaining the judiciary’s true independence, stating, “It is my administration’s total commitment to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary.”
He also promised to respect the separation of powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, aiming to enhance the judiciary’s efficiency in delivering justice.
He encouraged Justice Kekere-Ekun to continue demonstrating the ethical leadership, honesty, and fearlessness that have been the hallmarks of her judicial career.
In his address, Tinubu commended Justice Kekere-Ekun’s rise through the judicial ranks as a source of inspiration to women, especially young girls aspiring to succeed in male-dominated fields.
“Any girl child can dream big and have her dreams come true. It is worth celebrating,” he noted.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Justice Kekere-Ekun’s 89-year-old mother, Mama Wilfred Ogundimu, her husband, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun, and four former Chief Justices of the Federation. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other senior judicial officers also witnessed the historic event.
The President praised the Senate for its swift confirmation of the new CJN and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its continued support in maintaining Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
