U.S. Slaps 14% Tariff on Nigerian Exports, Citing Trade Imbalance

The United States has imposed a 14% tariff on goods imported from Nigeria, marking a shift in trade relations between both nations.

Announced by President Donald Trump during a trade policy event, the tariff is part of a broader effort to address what the U.S. describes as unfair trade practices.

The U.S. government argues that Nigeria’s 27% tariff on American exports has created an uneven playing field, prompting Washington to introduce its own levy.

This decision extends beyond Nigeria, as more than 50 countries including China, India, and the European Union, are facing increased tariffs under the new policy. Several African nations, including Algeria, Lesotho, and Kenya, will also be affected.
