A University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) student has reportedly died by suicide, with sources attributing the tragic incident to severe financial hardship.

The deceased, a second-year student from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), was said to have been academically outstanding, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 in the Mass Communication department.

According to reports, he had been struggling financially, particularly since resuming school last year.

Following the death of his father a few years ago, his mother, a retired teacher, had been his sole provider. His worsening financial situation prompted some of his peers to raise money to assist with tuition and living expenses.

Despite these efforts, the student was found unresponsive at his private apartment in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin.

It is believed that he consumed a poisonous substance while his roommate was away attending lectures. A note allegedly left behind suggested his financial troubles had become unbearable.

The discovery was made when the roommate returned and alerted others.

A senior official at the university, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as a devastating loss that has left both students and staff in shock and mourning.
