The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed confusion surrounding the announcement of a remedial examination, clarifying that this is not a new development for Nigerian candidates.
In response to recent reports, John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, stated during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on Tuesday, December 31, that Nigerian candidates have long had the opportunity to retake specific subjects through the private candidate exam.
Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the Nigeria Office at WAEC, explained that the concept of resitting exams has been in place for over six years.
Candidates who fail certain subjects in their formal schooling are not required to retake the entire examination.
Instead, they can opt for the private candidate exam, where only the failed subjects are retaken.
“The buzz around the February resit option is not new; it’s simply an extension of the existing structure for private candidate exams,” Dangut clarified.
“If a candidate has completed formal schooling and failed one or more subjects, they can sit for the private candidate exam to address those deficiencies.”
He further emphasised that while the private candidate exam provides this opportunity, the rules differ for school candidates.
After completing formal schooling, candidates who fail certain subjects cannot retake the entire exam.
They are required to take the private candidate exam to remedy the failed subjects.
