Africa’s first woman to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has revealed her intention to run for a second term as Director-General, with her current mandate set to expire in August 2025.

Okonjo-Iweala’s decision was affirmed by her spokesperson, Ismaila Dieng, on Monday, following strong support from WTO memebers.

Dieng stated that the 70-year-old leader was inspired by “overwhelming and broad-based support” in her bid for reappointment.

Additionally, the WTO’s African Group formally requested that she make herself available for a second term, proposing that the re-nomination process begin promptly.

The announcement was officially communicated to WTO chair Norwegian Ambassador Petter Olberg, and as of now, no other candidates have stepped forward.

Since taking office in March 2021, Okonjo-Iweala has focused on revitalizing the 166-member global trade body. Her leadership, characterized by a drive to achieve results, reflects her previous experience as Nigeria’s foreign and finance minister.
