The Lagos State Government has taken action by closing Smiley School International in Sangotedo, Lagos Island, following a tragic incident where a two-year-old girl, Rapheala Ogbodo, passed away after an event at the school’s swimming pool.
The girl’s mother, grieving her loss, took to social media to demand clarity about her daughter’s death, alleging that she drowned in the pool.
Her post, which included a photo of her daughter, criticised the school for misleading the public by claiming it was closed for maintenance.
In her words, “I lost my Pinky Ella,” and she warned other parents to be cautious when considering the school.
In response to the tragedy, a joint team from the Lagos State Safety Commission, the Office of Education Quality Assurance, and the Ministry of Education arrived at the scene to begin a thorough investigation.
The school is currently closed while inquiries are underway, and the government has expressed its sympathy to the bereaved family.
The mother further claimed that her daughter may have been electrocuted instead of drowning, challenging the school’s narrative.
She also raised concerns about the pool’s high barricade, questioning how a two-year-old could have accessed the area.
Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, stated that more information would be provided once the investigation is concluded.
He reiterated that school owners and caregivers are obligated to adhere to safety regulations to prevent such incidents.
