In a surprising turn of events, all security personnel attached to Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, have been withdrawn, leaving her without official protection amid ongoing political tensions in the House.
The withdrawal, confirmed on Thursday morning, affected all police officers and security personnel assigned to the Speaker and other Assembly members. However, the security details of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa have reportedly been reinstated.
Sources close to the Speaker expressed concerns over her vulnerability, stating that she has been left without protection. “All her security aides have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment,” a source said.
The development follows high-level political negotiations led by APC chieftains, including Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba. The intervention panel has reportedly recommended that both Meranda and Obasa step down to pave the way for new leadership from Lagos West.
While the reason for the security withdrawal remains unclear, it comes amid speculations that Meranda may resign as Speaker following the party’s intervention.
