As unrest escalates across parts of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu’s continued stay in Europe has drawn criticism from political opponents and citizens alike. However, the Presidency maintains that his physical absence has not disrupted the day-to-day running of the government.

According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu, who left Nigeria on April 2 for a working trip to France and later London, is expected to return after the Easter holidays. Onanuga assured Nigerians that the President continues to discharge his responsibilities, including giving directives to security agencies in response to unfolding events back home.

“Though abroad, the President is in constant contact with key officials and is closely monitoring developments,” he said in a Thursday statement.

This assurance has done little to quell public concern. Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have both questioned the timing of Tinubu’s extended trip abroad, especially in the face of mass killings reported in Plateau and Benue States.

Obi, referencing recent violence and economic hardship, described the situation as one that requires hands-on leadership. Atiku’s camp went further, accusing the President of neglect and failing to show empathy during a national crisis.

The Presidency has defended the trip as a working visit focused on internal government reviews and strategic planning. Tinubu is expected to return following the Easter holiday period.
