A first-year student of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, lost his life on Friday evening after reportedly being electrocuted during a thunderstorm, casting a shadow of grief over the academic community.
The 100-level Business Administration student was said to be charging his mobile phone and playing a game when lightning struck in the area, leading to the fatal incident at a private hostel close to the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Funso Ojo, described the occurrence as heartbreaking and extended the institution’s condolences to the bereaved family and friends. According to the university, the police have been notified, and Ojolo’s body was moved to the Wesley Guild Hospital mortuary after necessary procedures.
The management further noted that steps are being taken to assist the family in coping with the tragic loss. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the electrocution.
The university community continues to mourn Ojolo, offering prayers for the repose of his soul and support for those affected by the incident.
