The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding a two-day meeting in Accra, Ghana, beginning Tuesday, to address the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc.
In a statement on Tuesday, ECOWAS said the meeting would focus on the modalities and implications of the exit, including its impact on the bloc’s institutions and agencies operating in the three countries.
The session will also explore the possibility of setting up a structure to facilitate dialogue with the withdrawing states.
This meeting follows the recent imposition of a 0.5% import duty by the three junta-led nations on goods from ECOWAS countries, a move that contradicts the bloc’s aim of maintaining free trade despite their January exit.
