The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% fare increase for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, effective Monday, February 17, 2025.

This adjustment applies to all services under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).

LAMATA cited rising operational costs as the primary reason for the fare hike, emphasising the necessity to maintain uninterrupted bus services across Lagos.

In a statement, the agency noted, “The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos.”

This development follows the Lagos State Government’s earlier decision in November 2023 to cancel a 50% transport fare discount on all BRT services, reverting to previous prices.

The initial discount, introduced in August 2023, aimed to alleviate the financial burden on commuters following the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidies.

Commuters are advised to prepare for the new fare structure and adjust their travel plans accordingly.

LAMATA has called for public understanding and cooperation during this transition.
