The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has raised alarm over the increasing number of incidents involving foreign airlines that allegedly abandon Nigerian passengers mid-route or deport them back to Nigeria after partially completing their journey.
According to the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the authority has received multiple complaints from affected travellers, describing the practice as unacceptable and damaging to both passengers and the nation’s aviation reputation.
“These unfortunate incidents, where airlines fail to secure entry or transit clearance for passengers, have caused serious distress and are in violation of aviation standards,” Achimugu stated.
He explained that in many cases, passengers were unaware of potential travel or visa restrictions at their intended destinations or stopovers, leading to their rejection or deportation upon arrival.
The NCAA stressed that under the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), it is mandatory for airlines and their agents to inform passengers in advance of any restrictions or barriers that may affect their admissibility into transit or destination countries.
“Airlines must ensure thorough passenger screening and provide accurate, up-to-date information on visa and travel document requirements before ticket issuance and boarding,” Achimugu added.
The aviation regulator has therefore warned that it will no longer condone such incidents. Airlines found guilty of this practice will face penalties ranging from fines to suspension of flight operations or other appropriate sanctions.
Achimugu reaffirmed NCAA’s commitment to protecting the rights of Nigerian travellers and maintaining the integrity of the country’s aviation sector.
