The Senate has urged the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to collaborate with telecom operators on reducing internet and data costs for Nigerian consumers.

This call came after a motion raised by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South) during Wednesday’s plenary, highlighting the financial strain caused by recent tariff hikes from major providers like MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile.

Lawmakers expressed concern that the increase threatens livelihoods, especially for young Nigerians relying on the internet for business and education.

The Senate also called for policies to ensure affordable internet access and the establishment of tech hubs offering subsidised or free internet. Senate President Godswill Akpabio backed the motion, emphasising its importance for economic growth and digital innovation.
