Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has called for urgent action in prioritising maternal and newborn health as a key factor in achieving sustainable development. Her message, shared on Monday, marks the observance of World Health Day 2025.
Tinubu reflected on the ongoing challenges faced by women and newborns, many of whom continue to lose their lives daily from preventable causes related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. With the theme for this year’s World Health Day, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” she urged for collective responsibility in addressing these health disparities.
She stated, “On this World Health Day, we must remember that improving maternal and newborn health is not only an ethical obligation but also essential for the progress of any society. Every day, we face the tragic loss of women and babies from preventable causes. No mother should risk her life bringing a child into the world, and no newborn should be denied the chance for a healthy future.”
The First Lady also took the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of healthcare workers across Nigeria, recognising their contributions to improving health outcomes and their unwavering commitment to saving lives.
In closing, she reiterated the importance of creating a safer world for mothers and children, saying, “Let us work together to ensure that every mother can give birth safely, and every child can grow to reach their full potential, healthy and strong.”
