The House of Representatives is deliberating a bill to separate the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) from the Minister of Justice.

The bill, co-sponsored by Mansur Soro (Bauchi State) and Oluwole Oke (Osun State), the bill seeks to amend Section 150 of the Constitution to ensure the AGF, as the Chief Law Officer, operates independently from the Minister of Justice.

The bill also proposes a similar amendment to Section 195, creating distinct roles for state Attorneys General and Commissioners of Justice.

According to Soro, the separation is to enhance justice delivery, prevent conflicts of interest, and build public trust by reducing political interference in legal processes.

He further noted that while the reform may increase costs, its long-term benefits outweigh financial concerns.
