The Lagos State judiciary was thrown into a state of shock and sorrow following the unexpected death of Justice Abdulganiyu Safari, a serving judge at the Epe Division, who passed away early Sunday at the age of 62.
Justice Safari’s death, which came without prior public illness, led to the suspension of court proceedings in several divisions on Monday as judicial staff and legal professionals mourned one of the system’s most revered figures.
His burial took place later that day in line with Islamic customs at his home in Sango-Ota, Ogun State. According to insiders in the judiciary, the impact of his passing was deeply felt across courtrooms, with some judges opting to temporarily pause hearings in his honour.
Although normal activities are expected to gradually resume from Tuesday, certain divisions may remain closed until midweek as colleagues continue to pay tribute to the late jurist.
Justice Safari served with distinction throughout his career. Appointed as a judge in 2013 after his tenure as Chief Registrar, he was known for his mastery of family and probate law, as well as his unwavering commitment to ethical judicial conduct.
Confirming the development, judiciary staff union officials described him as “a pillar of integrity and discipline.” Tributes from senior legal officers praised his humility, sound judgments, and contributions to judicial reforms within Lagos State.
His passing has also affected ongoing high-profile cases, including the murder trial involving Chidinma Ojukwu, accused of killing tech executive Usifo Ataga. The case, which resumed recently, may see scheduling adjustments as the courts recover from the disruption caused by Safari’s death.
