President Bola Tinubu has reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to restoring democracy in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger through diplomatic means while prioritising the welfare of their citizens.

Speaking during a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Abuja, Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, criticised the affected nations’ leadership for failing to present clear transition plans.

He assured that ECOWAS would continue to push for democratic governance without punishing innocent citizens.

“We will not tolerate unconstitutional governments.

While advocating for democratic transitions, we remain committed to ensuring free movement and trade to protect citizens,” Tinubu said.

President Steinmeier highlighted the economic and security risks posed by the instability in the three nations, urging regional cooperation.

He expressed confidence in ECOWAS’ efforts while emphasising the importance of economic partnerships as part of contingency plans.

Both leaders agreed on the need for collaboration to stabilise the region and reintegrate the affected countries into ECOWAS.
