Former Senate President Wabara Criticises President and Vice President’s Foreign Trips

Senator Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President and key opposition figure, has raised concerns about President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima both being out of the country at the same time. Wabara called it a “serious mistake” for the country’s leaders to leave Nigeria without a clear plan for who is in charge.

Wabara’s comments came after President Tinubu left for a two-week working visit to France, while Vice President Shettima traveled to Senegal to represent Tinubu during the country’s Independence Day celebrations. The opposition leader questioned why both the President and Vice President couldn’t stay in the country to address important issues.

Wabaru argued that if the President needed to travel, he should have handed over power to the Vice President to act on his behalf. However, with Shettima also out of the country, there was no one to take charge, according to Wabara.

He also pointed out that there were serious issues in Nigeria, like growing insecurity in several states, that required the attention of the President and Vice President. Wabara felt it was wrong for the country’s leaders to prioritise foreign trips over addressing these urgent national problems.

Wabara called on the National Assembly to ensure that the government stays accountable and warned against what he called “careless leadership” that could hurt Nigeria’s reputation.
